Riccardo Arena is an italian artist based in Milan. His work investigates the relationships between territory, culture, psyche and landscape through the creation of articulated narrative and visual imagery.
His work explores multiple languages and techniques: photography, painting, graphic novels, design, film direction, animation, installations, teaching and writing; an eclectic approach that reflects a path that has led him to different professional skills and to collaborates with figures belonging to different fields.
Over the years, he developed independent projects in different countries of the world. The scheduled time for completion and the contents of these projects were defined through gathering, correspondence and study of heterogeneous documents accumulated in the course of his travel experiences. The work is conceived as a poetic formalization of the research.
The constant flitting between the stratification of study materials and their internal and intuitive reconfiguration is condensed into complex narrative structures that becomes the fundamental principle of the work: visual reflexions, exhibitions, installations, films, writings, conferences and workshops; all of these are all orchestrated into a constellation in mutual dialogue, tracing and contemplating the universal components that bound stories, myths and theories distant in time and geographies.
After the projects developed in China “Four Times a Tree” (2006/2008), Argentina “Dual death Ellero and visual ecosystem” (2009/2012), Russia “Vavilon” (2013/2017), he is currently working on “LuDD – Topography of Light” based on a novel written in 2019, which is inspired by a series of travels and researches among Iran, Armenia and Ethiopia.
